King Charles rules -- or ruins -- the day

It’s no surprise that the owners with Jamaal Charles on their teams made the semi-finals in all three of my fantasy leagues.  The Chiefs’ workhorse has been a potent scoring machine all season, reaching the end zone in all but three games and tallying at least 100 total yards in all but one.

Now you can bet your skid-marked Raider fanny that all three of Charles’ fantasy squads are heading for a title match next weekend, thanks to Charles’ extraordinary five-touchdown, 215-combined-yards romp.

Those of us who had the good fortune to advance this weekend – thanks, in large measure, to competing in the “other” playoff bracket – are hoping Charles left all his TDs behind in Oakland and will take a breather in Week 16.  But let’s not hold our breath.

Meanwhile, this turned out to be the perfect round to play the cocky owner that felt invincible with Peyton Manning at the helm.  While 289 yards, 2 TDs and an interception isn’t exactly a disastrous outing, it was certainly less than Peytonesque.

In fact, it was a great week to face pretty much any Bronco, unless you were savvy enough to snag Andre Caldwell, who stole the limelight as understudy to Wes Welker (concussion).  Owners who owe a significant debt to Knowshon Moreno, Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker or Julius Thomas for propelling them into the postseason may be on the outside looking in now – likely in a state of shock.

Let that be a lesson to you swaggering Charles owners.  Circumstances can change in a hurry in Fantasyland.  I, for one, am not intimidated by my next weekend’s matchup.  I’ll be bringing a certain Shady McCoy with me to the Big Dance on Sunday night.  His opponent: Chicago’s league-worst run defense.

Yahtzee!

FREE AGENT PICKS AND PANS

To win a fantasy championship, it helps to start with a great draft. But filling in your roster throughout the season with the right free agents is also important. Here's a look at one player worth considering for your postseason run, and another that would look better in your opponent’s lineup.

Catch ‘em while you can

Kirk Cousins, QB, Redskins.  If you’ve made it this far, you likely aren’t in the market for a quarterback.  That said, after Cousins’ strong outing in Atlanta, it might be tempting to slot him in – especially in two-QB leagues – for his Week 16 home game against the Cowboys.  You might have noticed that Dallas is what we in the biz call a “favorable” matchup.  To put it mildly.

Don’t be fooled

Matt Asiata, RB, Vikings.  If you scooped him up, and actually had the cojones to start him on Sunday, kudos for you.  Now you can thank him and say goodbye.  Adrian Peterson is expected to return in Week 16, sending Asiata back to the sidelines.  Hey, he had a great run.
